Oxygen Isotopes in Meteorites
نویسنده
چکیده
Oxygen isotope abundance variations in meteorites are very useful in elucidating chemical and physical processes that occurred during the formation of the solar system (Clayton, 1993). On Earth, the mean abundances of the three stable isotopes are O: 99.76%, O: 0.039%, and O: 0.202%. It is conventional to express variations in abundances of the isotopes in terms of isotopic ratios, relative to an arbitrary standard, called SMOW (for standard mean ocean water), as follows:

Oxygen Isotope Ratios in the Crust of Iron Meteorites
The separation factor, aM-0= ( 1 8 0 / 1 6 0 ) magnetite/' ( 1 8 0 / 1 6 0 ) atmospheric oxygen, between the magnetite crust of iron meteorites and atmospheric oxygen has been determined to be 0.9946 ± 0.0005. It is concluded that this fractionation of the oxygen isotopes is the consequence of an equilibrium isotope effect at high temperatures. It can be assumed that this is also valid for cosm...
متن کاملA ug 2 01 4 Radiogenic p - isotopes from SN Ia , nuclear physics uncertainties and Galactic chemical evolution compared with values in primitive meteorites
The nucleosynthesis of proton-rich isotopes is calculated for multi-dimensional Chandrasekhar-mass models of Type Ia supernovae with different metallicities. The predicted abundances of the short-lived radioactive isotopes Nb, Tc, and Sm are given in this framework. The abundance seeds are obtained by calculating s-process nucleosynthesis in the material accreted onto a carbon-oxygen white dwar...
متن کاملEvolution of the Solar Nebula. VIII. Spatial and Temporal Heterogeneity of Short-Lived Radioisotopes and Stable Oxygen Isotopes
Isotopic abundances of short-lived radionuclides such as Al provide the most precise chronometers of events in the early solar system, provided that they were initially homogeneously distributed. On the other hand, the abundances of the three stable isotopes of oxygen in primitive meteorites show a mass-independent fractionation that survived homogenization in the solar nebula. As as result of ...
متن کاملMolybdenum Isotopic Composition of Iron Meteorites, Chondrites and Refractory Inclusions
Introduction. Recent Mo isotopic studies of meteorites reported evidence for differences in isotopic compositions for whole rocks of some primitive [1-3] and differentiated meteorites [2,4], relative to terrestrial materials. Enrichments of rand p-process isotopes of up to 3-4 ε units (ε unit = parts in 10) over s-process dominated isotopes are the most prominent features. Certain types of pres...
متن کاملImpact Histories of Vesta and Vestoids Inferred
Introduction: The parent body of the howardites, eucrites and diogenites (HEDs) is thought to be asteroid (4) Vesta [1]. However, several eucrites have now been recognized, like NWA 011 and Ibitira, with major element compositions and mineralogy like normal eucrites but with different oxygen isotope compositions and minor element concentrations suggesting they are not from the same body [2, 3]....
